Best App for Deployment

When my husband left for deployment, my kids would always ask how many more days until Daddy would be home. They are 4 & 6, so it is hard for them to grasp such a large number of days. They felt like it for be “forever” before Daddy would return. I am so relieved I found the “Doing Time” app by Alexandria Software for the iPhone and iPod touch. Doing time was inspired by the Excel Spreadsheet that some of you may have heard of called “The Donut of Misery”.

This is not based on our return date. No OPSEC violations here!

The Doing Time app gives the number of days left and the percentage left of the deployment. But, the best part of the app is the visual pie chart. The pie chart shows how much of the deployment has been completed (in green) and how much is left (in red). It is so much easier for kids when they can see the red part shrinking every day. My kids know that no matter where we are, whatever we are doing they can ask to see “the countdown” and they can see the progress we have made.

Of course, for OPSEC reasons, you want to be careful to keep a lock on your phone. If it was lost or stolen homecoming dates could be revealed.

We all count down the days until our loved one if home. But, sometimes you need to look on the bright side. I wrote about the bright side of deployment here.

I like the “iDeploy” app. Breaks it down by meals left, hours of work left, hours of sleep left, etc. Not as kid friendly as this one, but it works for me. It’s free, too, which I like. Is the one you reviewed free?
